One question we get a lot: should the sign be plain Corten, or Corten with a stainless steel backing? Both look great — it just comes down to where the sign's going and how much you want it to stand out. Here's the simple way to decide.
How a Corten cut-out works
Our signs are cut from Corten steel, so the wording and design are cut right through. Whatever's behind the sign shows through the gaps. On a plain, light background — an open gateway or a pale wall — that reads perfectly on its own.
When a stainless backing helps
If the sign's going against something busy — trees, a hedge, a dark fence, or any cluttered background — the cut-out can get lost. Add a brushed stainless steel backing behind the Corten and the wording and design pop straight out. It's the difference between a sign you have to look for and one you can read from the road.
A few simple rules of thumb
- Plain wall or open gateway → Corten only is usually fine.
- Trees, hedge or busy background → go the stainless backing.
- Lots of fine detail or small text → the backing helps it stand out.
