Most wedding and anniversary gifts get used up or put away. The bottle gets drunk, the flowers wilt, the homeware ends up at the back of a cupboard. A year later, no one remembers who gave what.
A steel piece is the opposite. Cut with their names, their place, or the day it all started, it goes on the wall and stays there. Here's why steel wedding and anniversary gifts work so well, and how to get one made.
Why steel suits a couple
There's a nice bit of history here. Steel is the traditional gift for an 11th anniversary, and iron for the 6th. So a Corten steel piece isn't just a good-looking gift, it fits the tradition too.
But the real reason it works is simpler. Steel lasts. It doesn't fade, chip or wear out like most gifts do. A piece made for the day two people got married is still hanging there for the 10th, the 25th, the 50th. That's the sort of thing a wedding or anniversary gift should do.
Corten weathers to a warm rusty orange-brown, so it looks at home indoors on a wall or outside in the garden. Ask for a stainless steel backing and the names or design stand out sharper against a busy wall or a hedge.
Ideas that suit the day
The best pieces are personal. A few that we make often for couples:
Two names joined with an infinity loop — simple, timeless, and it reads as one whole piece. A tree of life with the family name across the middle, good for a wedding or a milestone anniversary. A mountain range with a heart marking a favourite spot, for the couple who got engaged on a walk or love a particular part of the country. Or just the family name and the year, clean and understated.
If they've got a place that means something — the beach, the hut, the farm, the town they met in — we can build the design around that. That's usually what makes a gift land.
How to get one made
Tell us the names, the date, and roughly where it's going. If you've got a design in mind, send it through; if not, we'll suggest a few options that suit.
We mock it up first so you can see exactly how it'll look before anything gets cut. Nothing goes ahead until you're happy with it. Manufacture is usually around 15 to 20 working days from when the design's approved, so give yourself a bit of time before the big day.
Every piece is made to order here in New Zealand, so it's genuinely one of a kind — not something off a shelf.
